The Double Coconut (Lodoicea maldivica), also known as the Coco de Mer, is a rare and unique species of palm that is native to the Seychelles islands. However, there is a notable collection of these palms at the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens in Sri Lanka, where they are cultivated and cared for.
The Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, located in Kandy, is one of Sri Lanka’s most famous and oldest botanical gardens. It is home to a wide variety of plants, including the Double Coconut, which is famed for its large, distinctive seed that can weigh up to 30 kg and is considered one of the heaviest seeds in the plant kingdom.
The Double Coconut is known for its large, twin-seeded nut, which has a unique shape resembling the human buttocks. While the species is native to the Seychelles, the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens is one of the few places outside of its natural habitat where you can see this extraordinary plant.
If you ever visit the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, the Double Coconut is one of the main attractions, along with other notable species of flora, making the garden a popular site for both tourists and botanists alike.
